Colby’s practice focuses primarily on workplace issues, including severance negotiations, wrongful dismissal claims, constructive dismissal claims, human rights complaints, non-competition and non-solicitation covenants, and drafting and reviewing employment agreements and independent contractor agreements. Colby has a strong track record obtaining positive outcomes for his clients in a wide range of workplace disputes. Colby also has general litigation experience, advancing and defending claims for breach of contract, debt actions, property disputes, residential and commercial tenancy disputes, and judicial review applications.

Colby brings a reasoned and pragmatic approach to litigation, providing advice centred on cost-effective solutions. He is often successful in resolving disputes through negotiated settlements and alternative dispute resolution. However, Colby is an effective advocate in Court when settlement is not possible. Colby has successfully appeared before the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Justice.

Colby grew up in Langdon, Alberta, before completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary and law school at the University of Ottawa. After completing his articles with the federal Department of Justice, Colby joined Getz, Collins in 2021.

Colby is also active outside the office. He has volunteer experience with several non-profit organizations, including Calgary Reads, SHOUT Canada, and the Ottawa Law Classic, a charity hockey event to raise funds for mental health research. Colby has also been a Hockey Canada referee for 16 seasons, officiating at the Major Junior, Junior A, and University level.
